Interview

The ladies men admire, I've heard,
Would shudder at a wicked word.
Their candle gives a single light;
They'd rather stay at home at night.
They do not keep awake till three,
Nor read erotic poetry.
They never sanction the impure,
Nor recognize an overture.
They shrink from powders and from paints...
So far, I've had no complaints.

---Dorothy Parker

Not that I'm all that popular with the boys, but the rest of the poem captures who I am pretty well. You know me. I'm that girl at the table who orders a Singapore Sling, a steak, RARE (don't bring it near me if it's not bleeding all over the plate, okay?), and a baked potato (butter AND sour cream, please. And I guess you can put those vegetables on my plate for garnish), when all the other girls have asked for grilled chicken Caesar salads or some other "girl food." I'm also the girl whose dress is always a little too tight and a little too low-cut, whose heels are just a little too high, who curses like one of the boys, and who always seems to be just a tad too loud and wearing just a shade too much makeup.

I guess some people would say I'm fun. Others..... Well, let's not repeat what they'd say I was, okay?

As for the facts, they go something like this:

For the purposes of this journal, my name is Kate. In the interest of staying alive and employed, I won't be using my real one. Some of you may know me from my first fling in the journaling world -- "If I Wrote You." For those you who don't, I'm 30 and I live in Philadelphia. Currently, I'm a graduate Creative Writing student and a TA at one Philadelphia University (let's call this one University A), and an adjunct English instructor at another across town (University B). I'm also a writer, an actress, and a freelance editor and proofreader -- The first two I do because I love them; the second two because I need to pay the rent somehow (you'd be surprised what teaching on the university level DOESN'T pay and I can only borrow so much from Mom and Dad before they start getting testy). I'm hyper-sensitive and creative, with a penchant for the dramatic -- a combination that makes for some rather interesting episodes.

Oh, and I fall down.... A LOT.

So stay tuned....
